In
this fast paced, often hilarious memoir, Linda shares her childhood
memories of growing up in rural Australia in the Fifties and
Sixties. This tightly woven collection contains the warm and
insightful reminiscences of a curious child fascinated by the
world and its people, having a joyous passion for life, and an
irrepressible thirst for answers. With fearless, self deprecating
humour, Linda pares back the layers of family life and takes
us on a rare journey of self discovery.
“’A Curious and Inelegant Childhood’
by Linda Brooks is an autobiography detailing her family,
friends and schooling throughout her childhood. She describes
life in a small Australian town and the adventures and misadventures
of her childhood. She clearly remembers young years of her
life. She tells of neighbourhood “wars” and her perception
of her mother, father and brother in different times of her
life. Adoration for her father melts off the pages . . .
a delightful story that will entertain any reader.”

If
we gather the threads from the snapshots of our childhood,
we find the person we have become. We find ourselves.’

Linda
was born and raised in Cooranbong, a small country town on the
east coast of Australia, near Lake Macquarie. Her friends often
tell her she should be a stand-up comedienne, but even though
Linda loves to perform, she would rather write and paint.
‘A Curious a Inelegant Childhood’ is Linda’s first published
book. With the user name of ‘cobaltangel’, Linda uploaded many
of her warm and humorous stories to ‘The Making of Modern Australia’
website, run by the ABC, where they regularly ended up in the
Highest Rated section. Her story ‘A Dangerous Time’ was chosen
by the producers as one of a few ‘Featured Stories’. Her stories
also landed on top of the pile with readers and she caught the
eye of a publisher. ‘A Curious and Inelegant Childhood’ was initially
launched as an eBook and now is available in print. There is
also an illustrated version of the book available, as well as
a large print edition.
Linda is still writing furiously, supporting causes and painting
landscapes and seascapes. With a background in nursing, and a
lot of life in general, she feels she has plenty more to write
about. She is currently working on her next
novella; which is based on her nursing training and experience.
She has also written several children’s stories, a ‘children’s
story for adults’ that deals with child abuse, the story of her
motherhood of a son with Asperger’s Syndrome and yes; even a
romance.
